Conchagua Volcano, also known as Cochague, is a complex of two overlapping stratovolcanoes forming a single conical edifice in southeastern El Salvador. The volcano overlooks the Gulf of Fonseca and is surrounded by the Bosque Conchagua forest. Its two peaks, Cerro de La Banderas (1133 meters) and Cerro del Ocotal (1225 meters), are geologically young, with ages of approximately 0.41 and 0.15 million years respectively. While there are active fumarolic areas on both peaks, there are no recorded eruptions in history. The volcano holds cultural importance as it was settled by the Lenca civilization, who revered the goddess Comizahual, an indigenous Jaguar Princess. Local Lenca legends say that Conchagua was her favorite volcano, and upon her death, she was transformed into many golden Chiltota birds atop the summit. Today, visitors can find a retreat at the summit named El Espíritu de la Montaña (Mountain Spirit), and a lookout called Mirador Espiritu de la Montana offers panoramic views of the Gulf of Fonseca. The volcano has also been selected as the site for the ambitious "Bitcoin City" project, a smart city initiative powered by geothermal energy from the volcano, announced in 2021 by President Nayib Bukele.
