Orava Castle is one of Slovakia's most beautiful and historically significant castles, located in the village of Oravský Podzámok. Its origins date back to the 13th century when it was first constructed as a stone fortress on the site of an earlier wooden fortification following the Mongol invasion of 1241. The castle evolved architecturally over centuries, blending Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Neo-Gothic styles, adapting to the needs of defense and residence. It was a strategic stronghold on the Hungarian-Polish trade route and became the center of Árva county in the 14th century. The castle complex is built on three terraces of a 520-meter limestone spur, rising 112 meters above the Orava river, offering commanding views of the region. Significant rebuilding occurred under the influential Thurzo family in the 16th and early 17th centuries, including fortifications against Ottoman incursions and the construction of palatial wings and a chapel with Renaissance and Baroque features. The castle suffered a devastating fire in 1800, after which it fell into disuse until restoration efforts in the 20th century transformed it into a national monument and museum. Orava Castle is also culturally notable as the filming location for the 1922 horror classic Nosferatu, where it represented Count Orlok's Transylvanian castle. Today, it is open to the public and stands as a dominant landmark of the Orava region, attracting visitors with its rich history, architectural grandeur, and scenic setting.

Histoire

1241

Orava Castle was originally built in the mid-13th century on the site of a wooden fortification erected after the Mongol invasion of 1241.

It became the center of Árva county by the 14th century and underwent multiple expansions and fortifications through the 15th and 16th centuries, especially under the ownership of John of Dubovec and later the Thurzo family.

1611

The castle's current form was largely finalized by 1611.

1800

It served as a military and administrative center until a catastrophic fire in 1800 destroyed much of its wooden structures, leading to its abandonment as a residence.

After a period of decline, it was restored in the 20th century and converted into a museum and national monument.
