St. Elisabeth Cathedral, located in Košice, Slovakia, is the largest church in the country and one of the easternmost Gothic cathedrals in Europe. Built primarily in the Gothic style, it covers an area of 1,200 square meters and can accommodate over 5,000 people. The cathedral features a unique architectural layout where the central nave and four aisles are intersected by a transept of equal height and width, forming a Greek cross. Its north tower rises to 59 meters, and the cathedral is adorned with richly decorated portals and three equal exterior gables, exemplifying the pinnacle of medieval stone craftsmanship in Central Europe. The complex includes the adjacent St. Michael Chapel and St. Urban Tower, all declared Cultural Heritage Monuments. The cathedral's origins trace back to an earlier Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Michael, later rededicated to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary in the 13th century. The current structure was constructed between the late 14th century and early 16th century, funded by wealthy citizens and supported by Emperor Sigismund and the papal curia. Its architectural style influenced surrounding regions, including parts of Poland and Transylvania. Today, it remains the main church of the Archdiocese of Košice and a significant symbol of Gothic architecture in Slovakia.

Histoire

The original church on the site was a Romanesque building dedicated to Saint Michael, dating back to the mid-11th century.

In the 13th century, after German settlers arrived and Saint Elizabeth became the town's patron, the church was rededicated to her and rebuilt in Gothic style, retaining its Romanesque tower.

1380

A fire around 1380 destroyed this earlier church, prompting the construction of the current cathedral.

1380

The first construction phase, from about 1380 to 1420, was financed by wealthy locals and supported by Emperor Sigismund and the papal curia.

The cathedral was built as a five-nave basilica with richly decorated portals, overseen by master builders including Mikuláš and Peter from Budin.

1420

A second construction phase from 1420 to 1440 introduced new masonry techniques influenced by Peter Parler, enhancing the cathedral's spaciousness and lightness.
