Grad Castle
Mura
Cmurek Castle, known locally as Grad Cmurek, is a medieval castle located in Trate, Slovenia, overlooking the Mura River near the Austrian border. Built in the first half of the 12th century by the lords of Cmurek, it features a Romanesque layout with Renaissance architectural elements added later. The castle passed through several noble families, including the von Traungaus, Counts of Celje, and Lords of Stubenberg, who owned it until the early 20th century. In the 18th century, a Romanesque tower was demolished, altering its original structure. After World War II, the castle served as a home for disabled and mentally ill individuals until 2004. Since 2014, it houses the Museum of Madness, which preserves the history of the castle and its institutional past, alongside exhibitions about the Mura River and local culture. The castle is also a venue for cultural events and is located on the Amazon of Europe Bike Trail, making it a unique cultural and historical attraction in the region.
