Metlika Castle, first mentioned in 1456, played a strategic role during the Ottoman incursions in the 15th and 16th centuries, owned by the Counts of Alap and later by the Frankopan family and the Zagreb bishopric chapterhouse.
The castle suffered fires in 1705 and 1790 but was repaired and bought by Jožef Savinšek in 1792.
It survived World War II intact and was nationalized afterward, becoming the seat of the Museum of White Carniola in 1951.
Since then, it has been a cultural landmark preserving the history and traditions of the Bela Krajina region.
