The Helix Bridge, officially known as The Helix and formerly the Double Helix Bridge, is a pedestrian bridge in Singapore connecting Marina Centre with Marina South across Marina Bay. Opened fully in July 2010, it features a unique double-helix structure inspired by the DNA molecule, designed by Cox Architecture, Arup engineers, and Architects 61. The bridge is constructed primarily from duplex stainless steel and carbon steel, showcasing advanced engineering techniques and quality control to maintain its durability and aesthetic. It includes four viewing platforms strategically placed to offer panoramic views of the Singapore skyline and events in Marina Bay. The bridge is also notable for its canopies made of fritted glass and perforated steel mesh that provide shade to pedestrians. At night, the bridge is illuminated with lights highlighting the double-helix form, including red and green lights representing the DNA bases cytosine, guanine, adenine, and thymine. This left-handed DNA-inspired design is unique and earned the bridge a place in the Left Handed DNA Hall of Fame. The Helix Bridge has received several prestigious awards, including the World's Best Transport Building at the World Architecture Festival Awards and recognition from Singapore's Building and Construction Authority. It also features in popular culture, appearing in the HBO series Westworld and in Mario Kart video games.

Astuce: Visit the Helix Bridge in the evening to experience its spectacular illumination highlighting the DNA-inspired structure. Early morning or late evening visits also provide cooler temperatures and less crowding. No advance ticket purchase is required as it is a public pedestrian bridge. The bridge has shaded canopies, making it comfortable for daytime visits. Check local event schedules, as the bridge offers great vantage points for Marina Bay events and fireworks displays.

Faits intéressants

  • The Helix Bridge is inspired by the double helix structure of DNA and features illuminated letters representing the four DNA bases: cytosine, guanine, adenine, and thymine.
  • It was the first bridge in the world to use a double-helix structure in its architectural and engineering design.
  • The bridge earned a place in the Left Handed DNA Hall of Fame in 2010 due to its left-handed DNA design, opposite to natural DNA.
  • The bridge's construction involved a temporary truss bridge to allow safe access and support during assembly over a busy navigation channel.
  • The Helix Bridge was awarded the 'World's Best Transport Building' at the 2010 World Architecture Festival Awards.
  • It appears in the HBO series Westworld and in the Singapore Speedway course in Mario Kart Tour and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Histoire

2007

Construction of the Helix Bridge began in 2007 and it was partially opened on April 24, 2010, with full access granted by July 18, 2010.

The bridge was designed by an international consortium including Cox Architecture from Australia, Arup engineers, and Singapore's Architects 61.

650

The design and construction involved innovative engineering techniques, including the use of approximately 650 tonnes of duplex stainless steel and 1000 tonnes of carbon steel.

The bridge's unique double-helix structure, inspired by DNA, was a world first in bridge design when completed.

It has won several awards recognizing its architectural and engineering excellence.
