Kranji Marshes
North West
Kranji Marshes is a unique nature reserve located in the northwestern region of Singapore, encompassing 54 hectares of freshwater marshland, woodland, and wetlands. This area was formed by the damming of the Kranji River to create the Kranji Reservoir, resulting in a vital habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Recognized for its ecological importance, the Nature Society Singapore proposed its conservation in 1990, leading to its inclusion in the Singapore Green Plan 1993. The marshes are especially significant for bird conservation, hosting at least 170 bird species, including several endangered ones. The Nature Society Singapore adopted the wetlands in 2008 and collaborated with PUB and NParks on a restoration program. Officially designated as Kranji Marshes Park in 2005, it was opened to the public in February 2016. The reserve offers a peaceful natural environment for birdwatching and nature walks, accessible primarily by car, bike, or the hourly Kranji Express shuttle. Its combination of freshwater marsh, woodland, and wetland ecosystems makes it an important green lung and biodiversity hotspot within Singapore's urban landscape.
