Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay
Central Singapore
Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is a premier performing arts centre located in Downtown Core, Singapore, near the mouth of the Singapore River. The complex comprises two distinct rounded structures: a concert hall with approximately 1,600 seats and a theatre accommodating around 2,000 attendees. Nicknamed "The Durian" due to its distinctive spiked aluminum sunshades resembling the tropical fruit, the Esplanade is a hallmark of Singapore’s cultural landscape. Designed collaboratively by DP Architects and Michael Wilford & Partners, the building balances panoramic views with solar shading suitable for Singapore's tropical climate. Since its official opening in 2002, the Esplanade has hosted a diverse range of performances including music, theatre, and dance, and also houses meeting venues and lifestyle arts services. It stands on the site of the former Satay Club, a beloved local food venue. The centre is well connected by the nearby Esplanade MRT station, facilitating easy access for visitors. The Esplanade continues to be a vibrant hub for both local and international arts, showcasing Singapore’s multicultural heritage through its varied programming.

History
The idea for the Esplanade emerged from a 1989 report by Singapore's Advisory Council on Culture and the Arts, which identified the need for a large-scale performing arts venue.
Established in 1992 as the Singapore Arts Centre, construction began in 1996 on the site of the former Satay Club.
The building was completed in 2001 and officially opened in 2002 by President S.
R.
Nathan.
The design underwent public scrutiny before finalizing its iconic durian-inspired sunshade cladding, balancing aesthetics with practical climate considerations.
Since opening, the Esplanade has hosted significant events, including the 117th IOC Session opening ceremony in 2005, and continues to be central to Singapore’s cultural development.
