Tiveden National Park
Örebro län
Tiveden National Park, located on the border between Örebro and Västra Götaland counties in Sweden, is a protected area renowned for its rugged forest terrain, deep ravines, and large granite boulders. Established in 1983 and expanded in 2017, the park covers over 20 square kilometers of largely untouched natural forest, lakes, and unique geological formations shaped by ancient glacial and tectonic activity. The park's landscape features narrow, deep valleys formed by faulting and numerous caves, with scattered massive stone blocks deposited by the last Ice Age. Vegetation is sparse in places due to the poor granite bedrock and thin soil, with slow-growing pine dominating rocky outcrops and patches of older forest with trees up to 200 years old. The park is a biological transition zone where northern and southern species coexist, including rare birds like the capercaillie and pearl owl, as well as mammals such as elk, deer, fox, badger, and beaver. Facilities include marked hiking trails, a visitor center with exhibitions, picnic and campfire sites, and bathing areas by Lake Trehörningen. The park's mission is to preserve the forest, lakes, and ravine landscape in a near-natural state, allowing ecosystems to evolve freely while providing public access to its most scenic and accessible parts.

Faits intéressants
- •Tiveden's granite bedrock fractured in a grid pattern during the formation of Lake Vättern, visible in the park's landscape today.
- •The park contains narrow ravines up to 25 to 50 meters deep formed by geological faulting.
- •Large boulder fields, such as at Stenkälla, were deposited by glacial movements during the last Ice Age.
- •Tiveden is a biological boundary zone where northern and southern species of plants and animals coexist.
- •Some trees in the park are over 200 years old, representing some of the oldest forest in the region.
Histoire
Tiveden National Park was established in 1983 to protect a unique forest and ravine landscape formed on ancient granite bedrock fractured during the formation of Lake Vättern about 900 to 1,400 million years ago.
The landscape was further shaped by the retreat of the inland ice approximately 11,000 years ago, which deposited large stone blocks and created the park's characteristic deep, narrow valleys and caves.
The park was significantly expanded in 2017 by about 50%, adding valuable forest and lake areas around Stora Trehörningen.
Historically, the dense forest and dramatic landscape inspired local folklore featuring trolls, dwarfs, and mythical creatures.
The area lies within the traditional province of Västergötland, known for its rich ancient history and natural heritage.
