Getterön Nature Reserve
Hallands län
Located in Varberg Municipality, Halland County, Sweden, Getterön Nature Reserve spans 350 hectares, including 235 hectares of land. Established in 1970, it is protected under Natura 2000 and recognized as a Ramsar wetland of international importance. The reserve is renowned as a top birdwatching site in northern Europe, hosting breeding species such as gadwall, redshank, ruff, and the common tern, which serves as the reserve's symbol. During winter, species like the little grebe, water rail, kingfisher, and whooper swan remain present, alongside notable raptors such as the peregrine falcon. The wetlands formed in the 1930s following the infilling of a shallow sound between Getterön peninsula and the mainland, creating two bays and extensive marshes. Restoration efforts in the 1990s improved habitat quality by replacing reed beds with open water and meadows, and constructing islands to support bird nesting. Visitors can explore the reserve via bird hides, observation towers, and trails. The Naturum visitor center offers permanent and temporary exhibitions, a café, and facilities, enhancing the educational and recreational experience. Seasonal guided tours, birdwatching events, and family-friendly activities such as nature trails and playgrounds add to the reserve's appeal throughout the year.

Histoire
Getterön Nature Reserve's wetlands originated in the 1930s when a shallow sound between the Getterön peninsula and mainland was filled in, forming two bays.
One bay became Varberg harbor, while the other, where the Himleån river flows into Kattegat, was gradually filled with dredged material, creating shallow wetlands.
These wetlands quickly attracted numerous bird species, making it a prime birdwatching location.
Over time, natural succession led to reed overgrowth, reducing habitat quality.
In the 1990s, restoration efforts involved removing reed beds, creating open water areas, meadows, and islands to enhance breeding habitats.
The reserve was officially established in 1970 and later gained protection as a Natura 2000 and Ramsar site.
