Studenica Monastery is a male monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church established in 1186 by the Serbian Grand Župan Stefan Nemanja. It became a significant spiritual, cultural, and artistic center under the guardianship of Saint Sava, the first Serbian Archbishop, who also authored the Studenica Typikon around 1208 to regulate monastic life. The complex includes four churches, notably the Church of the Virgin, which is a prime example of the Raška architectural style blending Romanesque and Byzantine influences. The monastery holds relics of the Nemanjić dynasty founders and kings, including Stefan Nemanja himself. Studenica is renowned for its rich collection of 13th and 14th-century frescoes, especially the monumental Crucifixion fresco from 1207, considered a pinnacle of medieval European art. Recognized as a cultural monument of exceptional importance in Serbia, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986. The monastery continues to be an active religious site and a symbol of Serbian medieval heritage.
