Monastery of Drenča
Rasinski okrug
The Monastery of Drenča, also known as Dušmanica, is a Serbian Orthodox monastery situated near the village of Drenča in the Raška District. Founded between 1379 and 1382 by the nobleman monk Dorotej and his son, the future Patriarch Danilo III, it was endowed with vast estates around Kruševac and Braničevo. The monastery church is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary and exemplifies the Morava architectural school, featuring a triconch base with a dome supported by free-standing pillars. Its altar area is divided into three parts, with distinctive external forms of the conches and apses. The church's exterior is decorated with a combination of stone and brick, adorned with painted ornamental plastic depicting intertwined motifs of plants, animals, and humans. The monastery was destroyed by the Ottomans in 1454 but underwent archaeological research and conservation efforts throughout the 20th century, culminating in a full restoration between 2003 and 2006. Today, the Monastery of Drenča is protected as a cultural monument of great importance by the Republic of Serbia and remains a significant religious and historical landmark.
