Bear Sanctuary Prishtina
Kosovo-Metohija
Bear Sanctuary Prishtina is a dedicated refuge for rescued brown bears located approximately 22 km from the city of Prishtina, Kosovo, near Badoc Lake. Founded in 2013 by the animal welfare organization Four Paws along with local authorities, the sanctuary provides a naturalistic environment for bears previously kept in captivity, often in small cages at restaurants. The sanctuary spans 16 hectares and features large enclosures designed to mimic the bears' natural habitat, promoting their physical and psychological well-being. It also includes an environmental education center, "Thesaret e Natyrës," opened in 2018 to raise public awareness about animal welfare and environmental issues in Kosovo. The sanctuary hosts educational programs, school field trips, and youth activities such as treasure hunts and playgrounds, alongside a vegetarian-friendly restaurant. As of late 2023, the sanctuary cares for 20 brown bears, many of which suffer from the psychological effects of prolonged captivity. The sanctuary also faces challenges due to Kosovo's political status, limiting its participation in international animal protection agreements. With over 40,000 visitors annually, it plays a significant role in regional wildlife conservation and education.
