Tešnjar
Kolubarski okrug
Tešnjar is the old part of the city of Valjevo, situated on the right bank of the Kolubara River, squeezed between the river flow and a hillside. It is one of the rare preserved Oriental-style urban ensembles in Serbia, consisting mainly of a single street running parallel to the river and several smaller streets descending the hill. Most houses date from the 19th century, maintaining the original style and spatial layout. Historically, Tešnjar served as the commercial and craft quarter of Valjevo, hosting shops, workshops, warehouses, and related auxiliary buildings in spacious backyards. Despite changes in the city, Tešnjar preserved its location and layout for centuries, even surviving periods of decline when other parts of Valjevo on the opposite riverbank became depopulated and ruined. During the late 19th century, as Valjevo experienced a revival and population growth, the city expanded again across the river, but Tešnjar remained the historic bazaar area, even extending further along the Kolubara. However, mid-20th-century industrialization diminished its traditional role, leading to decay. Unlike many other Serbian bazaars that disappeared, Tešnjar survived due to local care and has been undergoing restoration and conservation since the late 20th century, preserving its cultural and architectural heritage.
