The Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. George, also known as the Roman Catholic Dome, is a monumental Baroque cathedral located in Timișoara, Romania. Built between 1736 and 1774, it stands as the second largest Baroque religious building in Southeastern Europe after the Cathedral Basilica of Oradea. The cathedral serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Timișoara and is dedicated to St. George. Its architectural design is attributed to Johann Jakob Schellbauer, with possible influence from Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach, a renowned Baroque architect. The cathedral features a cross-shaped layout, constructed primarily of brick with stucco and stone exterior decorations, and is supported on wooden pillars due to the marshy terrain. It measures 55 meters in length, 22 meters in width, with a nave height of 16.9 meters and twin towers reaching 35.5 meters. The front doors are crafted from solid oak with ornamental nickel grilles. The interior is notable for its remarkable acoustics, hosting regular liturgies in Hungarian, German, and Romanian, as well as organ concerts. The cathedral also holds historical significance as a refuge during sieges and has a crypt where bishops and military nobles are buried. Its Baroque style is considered the most representative in Timișoara, making it a must-see cultural and architectural treasure.
