Histoire
The site originally featured a chapel dedicated to Saint Stephen built in 1361.
By the 16th century, this chapel was in disrepair and was demolished in 1568 to make way for a new chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies, initiated by the Bishop of Lamego.
Over time, devotion shifted from Saint Stephen to the Virgin Mary, particularly under the title of Our Lady of Remedies, associated with healing.
Construction of the current sanctuary began in 1750 and was only completed in 1905.
Since 1984, the sanctuary, including its grand staircase and park, has been classified as a Property of Public Interest in Portugal.
