Arrábida Natural Park
Setúbal
Arrábida Natural Park, established in 1976, is a protected biosphere reserve located on the Setúbal Peninsula in Portugal. Covering approximately 176 square kilometers, including both land and marine areas, the park is renowned for its unique carbonate geology forming the Serra da Arrábida mountain range, which rises to 501 meters. This limestone massif meets the Atlantic Ocean in a striking Mediterranean-like landscape, contrasting with Portugal's typical coastal scenery. The park hosts diverse Mediterranean maquis vegetation and is home to around 1,400 plant species, representing 40% of Portugal's flora, including rare orchids and the endemic trovisco-do-espichel (Euphorbia pedroi). Its fauna has evolved over centuries, with notable increases in wild boar populations. Visitors are attracted to its beautiful beaches such as Galapinhos, Portinho da Arrábida, and Figueirinha, as well as cultural landmarks like the 16th-century Convent of Our Lady of Arrábida. The park's geological significance includes unique formations like the Arrábida Marble and important tectonic features. It also encompasses diverse marine habitats and coastal cliffs protected within the Arrábida-Espichel Marine Area. The park's microclimate and Mediterranean characteristics create a rich natural environment, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and cultural tourists alike.
