Portalegre Cathedral
Portalegre
Portalegre Cathedral, also known as Sé de Portalegre or the Parish Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, is a distinguished national monument located in Portalegre, Portugal. Construction began in 1556 under the direction of Bishop Dom Julião de Alva, coinciding with the establishment of the Diocese of Portalegre, and was completed in the early 17th century. The cathedral is a prime example of reformed Mannerist architecture, reflecting the tastes of the Portuguese crown and the post-Tridentine Church. Its facade and structure incorporate elements from the 16th to 18th centuries, including 28 windows and characteristic towers with rounded arches housing bells. Inside, the cathedral features three naves with barrel vaults and ribbed arches, a richly decorated main altar with an eight-panel altarpiece, and chapels dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament and Saint Peter. Marble pulpits and railings accentuate the interior's solemnity. The cathedral underwent significant restoration in 1795 and more recently between 2021 and 2023, which included conservation of altarpieces, paintings, images, and azulejos, with the discovery of mural paintings dating from the late 16th to 18th centuries. This historic building remains an active religious center and a testament to Portugal's architectural and ecclesiastical heritage.

The last stone of the vault was placed in 1575, with the building consecrated in the same century.
In 1795, Bishop Manuel Tavares ordered restoration works that gave the cathedral much of its current appearance and expanded the Episcopal Palace.
