Barra Lighthouse, also known as Farol de Aveiro, is the tallest lighthouse in Portugal, located on Praia da Barra at the southern edge of the Ria de Aveiro. Completed in 1893, this 62-meter tall octagonal stone tower is a significant maritime beacon overseeing the Atlantic coast. It replaced earlier navigational aids and was originally equipped with an incandescent petrol lamp and horn. Over time, it underwent multiple upgrades, including electrification in 1936 and automation in 1990. Architecturally, it features distinctive white and red bands and a conical shape, built with red sandstone and granite. Visitors can climb its 271-step spiral staircase or use the elevator installed in the late 1950s to reach the lantern room. The lighthouse remains active, with a light range of approximately 23 nautical miles, and is open to the public on Wednesdays during specified hours, providing panoramic views of the coastline and Ria de Aveiro lagoon. As one of the tallest masonry lighthouses globally and the second tallest on the Iberian Peninsula, it holds cultural and historical importance as a symbol of Portugal’s maritime heritage.
