Kórnik Castle, located in the town of Kórnik in Poland's Wielkopolskie region, is a historic fortress originally built in the 14th century. It was remodeled in the mid-19th century into its present Gothic Revival style under the direction of Tytus Działyński, inspired by architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s plans. The castle sits on a moated island by Lake Kórnik and features distinctive architectural elements such as a four-centred arch entrance, a Gothic Revival tower with a contrasting red brick façade, and a chaitya arch influenced by Indian Islamic architecture. Inside, the castle houses the Kórnik Library and museum, showcasing rare manuscripts including Adam Mickiewicz's original "Dziady" and Napoleon's handwritten novella, as well as collections of historic furniture, European and Ukrainian paintings, sculptures, and military antiques. The Moor Room, inspired by Spain's Alhambra, is a highlight of the interior. The castle is surrounded by the Kórnik Arboretum, the oldest and largest arboretum in Poland, featuring over 3,300 taxa of trees and shrubs across 40 hectares. The castle has a rich cultural heritage, having been owned by prominent Polish noble families like the Górkows, Działyńskis, and Zamoyskis. Today, it functions as a museum and a research library under the Polish Academy of Sciences, and is recognized as a national Historic Monument of Poland.

Histoire

The origins of Kórnik Castle date back to the early 15th century, with the first defensive tower erected by Bishop Mikołaj of Kórnik.

Initially a Gothic fortress with a moat and drawbridge, it became a Renaissance residence in the 16th century under Stanisław Górka.

The castle passed through several noble families, including the Czarnkows, Grudzińskis, and from 1676 the Działyński family.

The 19th century saw a major neogothic reconstruction led by Tytus Działyński, who transformed it into a cultural center with a library and museum.

1924

After the death of Jan Kanty Działyński, the castle was inherited by Count Władysław Zamoyski, who bequeathed it to the Polish state in 1924.

During World War II, the castle housed a secret resistance printing press.
