Modlin Fortress, located near Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki in Poland, is one of the largest and best-preserved fortresses in the country. Originally constructed by the French between 1806 and 1812 under Napoleon's orders, it was intended as a strategic military supply depot and granary. The fortress incorporates multiple layers of fortifications from different periods, including French bastion designs, Russian expansions, and Polish modifications. Its strategic location at the confluence of the Narew and Vistula rivers made it a key defensive position for various armies over centuries. The fortress was actively defended during conflicts in 1813, 1831, 1915, and 1939, and played a role in the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1920. The complex includes a citadel, fortified bridgeheads, and a network of forts, with the citadel itself housing Europe's longest building, a 2,250-meter-long military barracks. Today, it stands as a monumental example of evolving military architecture and a testament to the region's turbulent history.
