Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, Toruń
Kujawsko-pomorskie
The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist in Toruń is a prime example of Gothic brick architecture and one of the city's most significant religious monuments. Located within the Old Town, the cathedral features a complex history spanning from the mid-13th century to the present day. The current structure evolved through several phases of construction and reconstruction, especially after a fire in 1351. It houses valuable medieval and early modern artworks, including wall paintings, a mystical crucifix, and sculptural compositions such as the depiction of St. Mary Magdalene with angels. The cathedral is also notable for its historical connections to prominent figures like King Jan Olbracht, whose heart is interred here, and Nicolaus Copernicus, commemorated by a baptismal font and an epitaph. The tower holds the medieval bell "Tuba Dei," dating from around 1500, which is the oldest bell of its kind in Poland and offers the highest vantage point over Toruń. Since 1992, the building has served as the cathedral of the Toruń diocese and was designated a minor basilica in 1935. Its rich heritage and architectural grandeur make it a must-see landmark in this UNESCO World Heritage city.
