Histoire
The land of Hamilton Gardens has a rich history, originally cultivated by the Ngaati Wairere people who established extensive maara kai (food gardens) along the Waikato River.
After colonial confiscations in the 1860s, the land was repurposed by the Hamilton Council for various uses including a rifle range and rubbish dump.
In 1960, the site was officially designated as a garden reserve following local advocacy.
Initially developed in the Gardenesque style, the gardens shifted in the late 1970s to a unique thematic concept emphasizing garden design as cultural expression.
This vision was shaped significantly by Dr.
Peter Sergel, who served as founding director and guided the gardens’ transformation into a living gallery of global garden traditions.
