The North Pole Expedition Museum, located in Longyearbyen on the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago, chronicles the rich history of Arctic exploration with a special focus on pioneering airship expeditions. Founded by Stefano Poli and Ingunn Løyning, the museum opened in 2008 in a historic building that formerly housed a pig farm and the Svalbard Museum. It was later relocated in 2012 to a modern facility closer to Longyearbyen's center. The museum's exhibits include artifacts, documents, photographs, and original expedition films that vividly portray the challenges and achievements of explorers striving to reach the North Pole. Key highlights feature airships like the America, Norge, and Italia, including the dramatic rescue efforts following the Italia crash in 1928. The museum also covers the 1897 balloon expedition led by Salomon August Andrée and the ongoing investigations into its fate. Through a neutral and comprehensive narrative, the museum celebrates the spirit of curiosity, ambition, and scientific endeavor that propelled polar exploration. Visitors can also enjoy a museum shop offering local souvenirs and a cozy café lounge by the fireplace.

Histoire

2008

The North Pole Expedition Museum was established in 2008 during the International Polar Year, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the Italia airship crash and the 30th anniversary of explorer Umberto Nobile's death.

Initially planned as a new building, the museum opened in a repurposed former pig farm in Longyearbyen due to ownership disputes.

2012

In 2012, it moved to a newly constructed building near central Longyearbyen.

The museum was co-founded by Italian Stefano Poli and Norwegian Ingunn Løyning to preserve and present the history of Arctic aviation and exploration, documenting significant expeditions from the early 20th century onwards.
