Histoire

1931

Sunnmøre Museum was founded in 1931 after a period of debate and efforts to establish a dedicated museum for the Sunnmøre district, separate from the Ålesund Museum.

The museum was established on a 28-acre site under Borgund parish, with significant contributions from local cultural organizations and key figures such as Rasmus Buset and Anders Vassbotn.

In the 1930s, historic buildings were relocated to the museum grounds to recreate traditional farm environments.

1946

The construction of a fireproof building began before World War II but was delayed due to the war, eventually opening in 1946 by Crown Prince Olav.

1955

The museum also developed a significant collection of traditional boats, with dedicated boat halls built in 1955 to preserve them.

Over the decades, Sunnmøre Museum has grown to become the largest cultural institution in the region, playing a key role in preserving and promoting Sunnmøre's cultural heritage.
