Histoire
The roots of the Zeeuws Museum trace back to the late 18th century with the founding of the Museum Medioburgense by the Royal Zeeland Society of Sciences in Middelburg.
In 1886, the Kunstmuseum was also established in the city.
Both institutions declined during the 20th century, and part of their collections was lost in the 1940 bombing of Middelburg.
In 1961, the Zeeland Museum Foundation consolidated collections and moved into the Museum Medioburgense building.
Plans to relocate to the Abbey of Middelburg culminated in the museum's opening there in 1972 after extensive restoration.
A major renovation from 2001 to 2007 modernized the museum, enhancing exhibition spaces and visitor facilities, with an official reopening led by the Queen's Commissioner of Zeeland.
