Fort Louis is a historic French military fort located on Marigot Hill overlooking Marigot Bay on the French side of Saint Martin. Constructed in 1789 under the orders of King Louis XVI and overseen by Jean-Sébastien de Durat, it was built to defend the harbor's warehouses where local products such as coffee, salt, rum, and cane sugar were stored. Originally a wooden fort, it expanded by the early 19th century to include two additional batteries along the slopes of Marigot Hill. The fort housed barracks for 54 troops, a guard room, a kitchen, and a cistern. Although the island was occupied by English troops multiple times in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, there is no evidence that Fort Louis itself was occupied by the English. The fort was abandoned and decommissioned in 1851. Restoration efforts occurred in the early 1990s, preserving its historical significance and structure. Today, Fort Louis stands as a cultural landmark offering panoramic views of Marigot and its harbor, reflecting its strategic military past and colonial heritage.
