History

The eastern side of Groningen's Great Market Square was heavily damaged during World War II and underwent various reconstructions that eventually lost architectural appeal.

2005

Plans to redevelop this area began in 2005, culminating in an architectural competition won by NL Architects.

2011

Construction started in 2011 but was delayed due to induced earthquakes from gas drilling in the region, requiring redesigns to ensure earthquake resistance.

2019

Despite political and financial challenges, the Forum was completed and officially opened on 29 November 2019 as part of a larger revitalization of the city center.
