Opened on September 30, 1903, it was initially named after Vasco da Gama.
Over the decades, the market's centrality was challenged due to urban growth, and by the mid-20th century, it was considered aesthetically outdated.
Despite predictions of its disappearance, rehabilitation efforts began in 2001, leading to a significant expansion of stalls by 2013.
However, the construction of a multi-storey car park in 2008 partially obscured the market's visibility.
