Pasar Payang
Terengganu
Pasar Payang is a prominent traditional market located near the Shahbandar Jetty in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. Established in 1964 and officially opened in 1968 by Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, it serves as a major commercial hub for locals and tourists alike. The market's two levels offer distinct shopping experiences: the ground floor features fresh wet market goods such as seafood, vegetables, and traditional Terengganu kuih-muih (local sweets), while the upper floor showcases a variety of textiles including Terengganu batik, silk, brocade, and Malay songket fabrics. Its strategic location facing the South China Sea makes it a popular stopover for visitors heading to nearby islands by boat. Pasar Payang is closely linked to the historical Kampung Cina (Chinatown) area of Kuala Terengganu, reflecting the city's multicultural trading heritage. After undergoing significant renovations completed in 2018, the market now offers a cleaner and more modern environment while preserving its traditional charm. It remains a vibrant center for cultural exchange and a showcase of Terengganu's artisanal crafts and culinary delights.

Histoire
Pasar Payang was developed in 1964 to accommodate traders displaced from the demolished Pasar Besar Tanjung.
Initially consisting of wooden stalls, it was upgraded and officially inaugurated in 1968 by the then Sultan of Terengganu, who was also Malaysia's fourth Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The market's name derives from the traditional 'perahu payang' fishing boats used historically in local trade, with 'payang' referring to a type of fishing net or possibly a local pronunciation of 'tempayan' (clay jar).
In 2019, the original building was demolished and replaced with a modern market structure to improve facilities and hygiene, aligning with Terengganu's image as a coastal heritage city.
