Sabah State Museum, located in Kota Kinabalu on a 17-hectare site at Bukit Istana Lama, is the principal museum of the Malaysian state of Sabah. Established originally in 1965 in a shophouse on Gaya Street, the museum was founded largely through the efforts of the Sabah Society and the donation of George Cathcart Woolley's extensive collection of photographs, diaries, and artifacts. The museum moved to its current purpose-built location in 1984, inaugurated by the seventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang. The complex includes not only the museum but also an ethnobotanic garden, a zoo, and a heritage village that vividly depicts traditional Sabahan lifestyles. The main building houses the Sabah Art Gallery alongside galleries dedicated to Islamic civilization, archaeology, natural history, ceramics, and brassware. The museum's mission is to collect, preserve, and research ethnographic, archaeological, historical, numismatic, botanical, zoological, and mineralogical collections from across Sabah, fostering a deep understanding of the state's diverse cultural and natural heritage. Its exhibits and outdoor spaces offer visitors a comprehensive view of Sabah's history and traditions within a lush tropical setting, making it a unique cultural destination in East Malaysia.
