The original fort, known as Kota Kuala Bahang, was established in 1611 but was destroyed by Portuguese forces led by Admiral Furtado in the same year.

It was rebuilt but again fell to Sultan Iskandar Muda of Aceh in 1619, who destroyed the pepper plantations to weaken Kedah's economic power.
