Istana Bukit Serene was constructed between 1933 and 1939 as a gift from the Johor government to Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Abu Bakar in celebration of his 40th year as Sultan.

During World War II, the palace was used as the headquarters by Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita, who utilized its tower for military observation.

Despite being a strategic location, the British forces refrained from attacking the palace out of respect for the Sultan.

After the war, Sultan Ibrahim was temporarily displaced from the palace.
