Histoire
The area around Varniai Regional Park has a history rooted in medieval times when it served as hunting grounds for Lithuanian dukes and landlords, with strict rules to protect wildlife.
Following Lithuania's independence in 1918, efforts to establish nature reserves began, intensifying after World War II with the creation of hunting preserves and protected areas.
Between 1960 and 1975, nearly 100 protected areas were established, although they covered only about 2% of Lithuania's territory at the time.
After the restoration of independence in 1990, Lithuania expanded its protected areas network, establishing national and regional parks, including the Žemaitija Regional Park, which now contributes to the country's 11.5% coverage of protected lands.
