Talkša Lake
Šiaulių apskritis
Talkša Lake, located in the city of Šiauliai in northern Lithuania, is a freshwater lake covering approximately 60.9 hectares. It lies just one kilometer from the city center, bordered by Šiauliai Hill (now a cemetery) on the west and Lepšiai Hill on the east. The lake is fed by the Rūdė stream and drained by the Kulpė river, which connects it to the nearby Ginkūnai Lake through a reed-covered channel. Historically, the area around Talkša was a defensive wetland during the battles with the Teutonic Knights, featuring a wooden defensive structure called a kūlgrinda. Over the centuries, human activity transformed the lake and surrounding wetlands, including the construction of mills, factories, and the regulation of watercourses in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the lake is surrounded by dense vegetation and reed beds, supporting rare plant species and birdlife, including three species listed in Lithuania's Red Book: the spoonbill, great bittern, and little tern. The eastern shore hosts Talša Park, while the western shore features a rowing base, making the lake a hub for both nature lovers and sports enthusiasts. An ecological trail with 23 stations offers educational insights into the lake's flora, fauna, and history, providing visitors with an immersive nature experience. Recent restoration efforts have improved water quality and expanded the lake's connection with Ginkūnai Lake, enhancing its potential for international rowing competitions.

Histoire
Originally a defensive wetland during the conflicts with the Teutonic Knights, the area that is now Talkša Lake featured a wooden defensive path (kūlgrinda) connecting Šiauliai Hill to the eastern bank.
Until around 1780, Talkša Lake was part of a larger wetland complex including Bitinėlis (now Ginkūnai Lake) and Vinkšna Lake, fed by the Kulpė and Rūdė streams.
In the late 18th and 19th centuries, human intervention included damming the Kulpė river, construction of mills, factories such as the Ch.
Frenkel leather factory, and railway lines, which altered the natural water flow and led to changes in the lake's ecology.
In the 20th century, urban expansion and wetland drainage further impacted the area.
Since 2002, restoration and cleaning efforts have been undertaken to improve the lake's ecological status and connectivity with Ginkūnai Lake.
