Koh Rong
Preah Sihanouk [Preăh Seihânŭ]
Koh Rong, located approximately 25 kilometers from Sihanoukville in Cambodia's Preah Sihanouk province, is the country's second largest island covering around 78 square kilometers. The island features a predominantly hilly terrain with a peak of 316 meters in the northwest and is almost entirely forested, housing seasonal waterfalls and diverse ecosystems. Its extensive coastline stretches about 61 kilometers, with 43 kilometers of sandy beaches ranging from white to rose-colored sands, alongside bays, capes, and striking sandstone rock formations. Four village communities-Koh Tuich, Doeum D'keuw, Prek Svay, and Sok San-inhabit the island, which has developed into a popular tourist destination with numerous accommodations. Koh Rong is part of the Koh Rong Marine National Park, established in 2018, protecting its rich marine biodiversity. The island also gained international attention as a filming location for several seasons of the reality TV series "Survivor." Despite its natural beauty, Koh Rong faces environmental challenges due to illegal logging and the replacement of native forests with commercial plantations. The island's cultural and natural assets make it a unique destination blending ecological significance with tourism appeal.
