Ngare Ndare Forest is a vibrant natural preserve located in Meru County, Eastern Kenya, nestled in the foothills north of Mount Kenya. The forest serves as a critical ecological corridor connecting the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy with the Mount Kenya forest preserve, facilitating wildlife movement, especially for elephants through a unique tunnel system. The Ngare Ndare River courses through the forest, feeding natural pools and waterfalls that create stunning azure swimming spots. The forest is home to diverse wildlife including large mammals, colobus monkeys, and over 200 bird species, contributing to its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Visitors can experience wildlife observation from a remarkable 450-metre canopy bridge, the longest in East Africa, and have the opportunity to camp on platforms suspended 7 metres above ground. Managed by the Ngare Ndare Forest Trust since 2004, the preserve also supports local communities through conservation efforts, tree planting, and sustainable development initiatives. The name "Ngare Ndare" translates from Maasai as "water for the goats" or poetically as "waterfall of the gods," reflecting the forest's abundant water resources and spiritual significance.
