Matsuyama Castle, located atop Mount Katsuyama in Matsuyama city, Ehime Prefecture, is one of Japan's twelve remaining original castles and a prime example of a hilltop castle (hirayamajiro). Constructed beginning in 1602 by feudal lord Kato Yoshiaki, the castle was built to serve as the seat of the Iyo-Matsuyama Domain during the Edo period. It features a complex of 21 surviving wooden buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties, including the main keep (tenshu), which is among the newest of the original keeps, rebuilt in the late Edo period. The castle complex is notable for its well-preserved architecture, stone walls, and moat systems, as well as its strategic layout with multiple baileys such as the main bailey (honmaru), second bailey (ninomaru), and third bailey (sannomaru). Visitors can explore the castle grounds, enjoy panoramic views of Matsuyama city and the Seto Inland Sea, and experience the historical atmosphere enhanced by the surrounding castle park. Matsuyama Castle is also recognized as one of Japan's three great hilltop castles and is a popular tourist destination, especially during cherry blossom season when the castle and its park are illuminated at night.
