Milk River Bath, located in the South West corner of Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, is a mineral spa famous for its warm waters that contain high levels of radioactivity, reputedly more than some other notable spas worldwide. Established in 1794 and owned by the Government of Jamaica, the spa features six public baths housed in smartly tiled private rooms, each designed to accommodate multiple guests but with changing areas suitable for one person at a time. The mineral-rich water flows swiftly through these baths, offering a unique soaking experience typically lasting around 15 minutes. Above the baths, there is a hotel with approximately 20 mostly ensuite bedrooms, complemented by a cocktail bar and a restaurant serving specially cooked meals outside regular hours. Nearby, a swimming pool fed by the mineral waters is sometimes available for visitors. The spa is situated about two miles south of the village of Milk River, near the Carpenter's Mountains and Vere Plains, with the Milk River flowing nearby. The water's chemical composition includes calcium, magnesium, sodium, sulphate, chloride, and silica, with radioactivity measured at 16 nCuries per litre, making it about nine times more radioactive than the waters at Bath, England, and three times those at Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. This unique combination of mineral content and warmth contributes to its reputation as a therapeutic destination.

Histoire

1794

Milk River Bath was established in 1794 and has been owned by the Government of Jamaica since its inception.

According to local lore, in the 17th century, a slave who had been severely beaten and left for dead was later found fully recovered after bathing in the mineral waters.

His master then made a pact with him to never punish him again in exchange for revealing the location of the healing spring.

Over the centuries, the spa developed into a public facility with multiple baths and a hotel to accommodate visitors seeking therapeutic benefits from its unique waters.
