Spoleto Cathedral
Umbria
Spoleto Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, is the principal Catholic place of worship in Spoleto and the mother church of the Archdiocese of Spoleto-Norcia. Constructed between 1151 and 1227 on the site of an earlier church, it exemplifies a blend of Romanesque and Baroque styles, with a distinctive 'capanna' style façade featuring a remarkable 13th-century mosaic by Solsterno. The Renaissance portico, added in 1491 by Antonio Barocci, enhances its grandeur with five elegant arches and Corinthian columns. The interior underwent significant Baroque renovations in the 17th and 18th centuries, including work by Giuseppe Valadier, who designed altars and decorative elements. A highlight is the presbytery’s 15th-century fresco cycle by Filippo Lippi, illustrating the Life of the Virgin, painted between 1467 and 1469. The cathedral’s bell tower, dating from the 13th century, stands tall with biforas on each side and an octagonal spire. This monumental church is a national Italian monument and a cultural jewel of Umbria, blending centuries of artistic and architectural heritage.
