History
The gallery was founded in 1884, largely thanks to the efforts of Francesco Podesti, a prominent local painter whose works are central to the collection.
Initially installed in the former convent of San Domenico, the gallery moved in 1927 to the ex-convent of San Francesco alle Scale, becoming part of the National Archaeological Museum of the Marche.
During World War II, major artworks were safeguarded in the Rocca di Sassocorvaro to protect them from bombing, as the original gallery location was destroyed in 1943.
Post-war, the collection was housed in Urbino until its return to Ancona in the 1950s, leading to the gallery’s reopening in 1958 at Palazzo degli Anziani.
Since 1973, the gallery has been located in the historic Palazzo Bosdari, a medieval noble residence extensively remodeled in the 16th century, with recent expansions to Palazzo Bonomini enhancing exhibition space.
