The Riserva Naturale della Foce dell'Isonzo is a protected regional nature reserve located in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy, established in 1996. It spans approximately 2,338 hectares on land and an additional 1,154 hectares of aquatic environments, encompassing the lagoon and wetland ecosystems at the mouth of the Isonzo River in the province of Gorizia. Historically known as the Island of Cona, the area was characterized by wild marsh and forest vegetation with numerous springs feeding into the Quarantia canal, which separates the island from the mainland. In the late 1930s, engineering works including the construction of a dam altered the landscape to create a land connection to the island and enabled agricultural reclamation. However, much of the original wetlands were lost until restoration efforts began in the 1970s, culminating in the formal establishment of the reserve in 1996. The reserve is internationally recognized as a wetland of importance under the Ramsar Convention since 2016. It hosts an exceptionally rich avian biodiversity, with monitoring programs documenting 322 bird species that reside, winter, or migrate through the area, making it a critical habitat for birdwatching and conservation. The reserve also supports diverse flora typical of wetland environments, contributing to its ecological significance in the region.

Histoire

The area known as the Island of Cona was once a wild marshland with rich vegetation and springs feeding local waterways.

1937

In 1937-38, a dam was constructed to connect the island to the mainland and reclaim land for agriculture, which led to the destruction of much of the wetland habitat.

1976

Environmental awareness grew in the 1970s, and restoration projects began in 1976 to revive the marshes.

1983

The first protected area project was initiated in 1983, and the reserve was officially established by regional law in 1996.
