Tawa Reservoir is an artificial lake formed by the Tawa Dam on the Tawa River in Madhya Pradesh, India. Constructed between 1958 and 1978, the dam was built to provide irrigation to the agricultural lands of Narmadapuram and Harda districts, as well as to generate hydroelectric power. The reservoir spans a catchment area of approximately 6000 square kilometers and features a small hydroelectric power plant with two 6.75 MW turbo generators. It forms the western boundary of the Satpura National Park and the Bori Wildlife Sanctuary, making it an important ecological zone. The reservoir is a popular tourist destination, especially during the monsoon season, when visitors can enjoy cruise boat services organized by the tourism department. The site has been recognized as a Ramsar wetland of national importance as of 2024, highlighting its environmental significance. The reservoir's history is marked by social challenges faced by displaced local communities, who formed cooperatives to regain fishing rights and sustainably manage fish populations. Today, the reservoir is protected from poaching and continues to serve as a crucial resource for irrigation, power generation, and eco-tourism.

History

1958

The Tawa Dam project began in 1958 and was completed in 1978 under the leadership of Shri Vinay Kumar Diwan, known for his public welfare efforts.

The dam was constructed to provide irrigation and hydroelectric power to the region.

However, the project displaced local communities who were inadequately compensated and resettled.

Over time, these oustees lost fishing rights, which were initially taken over by the government and later by private companies, leading to overfishing and conflict.

The affected communities formed the Tawa Matsya Sangh cooperative to regain sustainable fishing rights, but eventually lost legal battles to retain these rights.

The reservoir is now protected to preserve fish stocks and wildlife.
