Nyíregyháza Zoo
Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg
Nyíregyháza Zoo, also known as Sóstó Zoo, is a prominent zoological park located 5 km north of Nyíregyháza in the Sóstó recreation area of Hungary. Established in 1974 initially as a wild park focusing on native Hungarian and Pannonian Basin species, the zoo has since expanded to 30 hectares and hosts over 5000 animals representing 500 species, making it the richest in mammals among Hungarian zoos, particularly in primates and pachyderms. The zoo features a unique exhibit system using water-filled ditches to separate animals from visitors, enhancing safety and viewing experience. Notable developments include the 1996 expansion with the large Africa Panorama exhibit, housing zebras, ostriches, and wildebeests, and the aviary with Hungary's richest parrot and cockatoo collection. The zoo also boasts Hungary's first saltwater aquarium in the countryside, a tropical house, a polar panorama with penguins and polar bears, and specialized exhibits for lions, elephants, and white tigers. Its natural oak forest location within a 36.5-hectare area allows visitors to explore animals from different continents in a near-natural environment. The zoo is a member of major zoological associations such as EAZA and WAZA, emphasizing conservation and education. Alongside the zoo, the Sóstó area offers additional attractions like a beach, spa, open-air museum, and forest park, making it a comprehensive recreational destination.

Nyíregyháza Zoo opened in 1974 as Nyíregyházi Vadaspark, primarily exhibiting native European species in a 14-hectare oak forest.
In 1996, under director László Gajdos, the zoo underwent major expansion and was renamed Nyíregyházi Állatpark, shifting focus to exotic species and enlarging its area to 30 hectares.
Key milestones include the opening of the Africa Panorama in 1996, the establishment of Hungary's first saltwater aquarium in 2000, and the creation of the Polar Panorama in 2003.
Over the years, the zoo has continuously expanded its collection and facilities, adding specialized exhibits for lions, elephants, and rare species, and building Hungary's only zoo hotel, Hotel Dzsungel, in 2006.
