Lillafüred Waterfall
Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén
Lillafüred Waterfall is Hungary's highest waterfall, boasting a vertical drop of 20 meters. Though it appears natural, the waterfall is an artificial creation formed during the construction of the neo-Renaissance style Lillafüred Palace Hotel between 1927 and 1930. The waterfall is situated between the Szinva and Garadna streams, cascading into the valley below the hotel. Visitors can safely access a path leading beneath the waterfall, where the Anna Cave lies partially underneath the cascade. The waterfall's water originates from the Szinva springs, with additional water pumped from Lake Hámori during dry periods to maintain flow for tourism. The surrounding hanging gardens, terraced with retaining walls, create a picturesque setting that complements the hotel's medieval-inspired architecture. In winter, the frozen waterfall offers a magical, fairy-tale-like spectacle. The site is part of the larger Lillafüred resort area, which includes botanical gardens, caves, and hiking trails in the Bükk National Park, making it a favored destination for nature lovers and cultural tourists alike.

Astuce: The best time to visit is spring through autumn when the waterfall flows abundantly and the surrounding gardens are in bloom. In dry months, water flow may be supplemented by pumps, but natural flow is strongest after rains. Winter visits offer the unique experience of viewing the frozen waterfall. It is recommended to arrive early or late in the day to avoid crowds and to purchase tickets for nearby attractions in advance when possible. The waterfall is accessible via public transport including buses and the narrow-gauge Lillafüredi forest railway. Parking is available nearby, but limited. Wear sturdy shoes for walking the paths around the waterfall and gardens.

Histoire
The waterfall was created between 1927 and 1930 alongside the construction of the Lillafüred Palace Hotel, designed by architect Kálmán Lux in neo-Renaissance style.
The artificial cascade was engineered to enhance the resort's appeal and is fed by the Szinva springs and overflow from Lake Hámori.
During dry seasons, water is pumped from the lake to maintain the waterfall's flow.
The resort itself was initiated by Count András Bethlen in the late 19th century as a holiday destination.
Over the decades, the waterfall and surrounding gardens have become iconic features of Lillafüred, contributing to its status as a popular tourist resort in the Bükk Mountains.
