Kutjevo Castle
Požeško-slavonska županija
Kutjevo Castle, located in Požeško-slavonska županija, Croatia, is a Baroque castle complex originally constructed as a Jesuit residence between 1721 and 1735. It was built on the site of the medieval Cistercian abbey Honestae Vallis, founded in 1232 by Archbishop Ugrin II Czak. The Jesuits arrived in 1704, adapting the ruined abbey church and constructing a new Baroque complex under the direction of Jesuit painter and architect Josip Kraljić. The castle features three wings enclosing an inner courtyard, with a church on the fourth side. Its most striking architectural feature is the central polygonal tower topped with a picturesque onion-shaped roof, restored to its original form about a decade ago. The castle also holds significant medieval remains, including fresco fragments in the northern sacristy and abbey walls in the southern wing. In the late 19th century, the estate was acquired by Vjenceslav Turković and Franjo Türk, who developed notable wine production there. Post-World War II, the castle was nationalized. Today, Kutjevo Castle stands as a cultural and historical landmark, combining religious, architectural, and viticultural heritage.
