St. Joseph Church, also known as the National Sanctuary of St. Joseph, is a prominent Croatian Catholic basilica located in the Dubovac area of Karlovac. It was officially declared a national sanctuary by Croatian bishops in 1987 to deepen and spread the centuries-long veneration of St. Joseph among the Croatian people. The church stands near the historic 13th-century Dubovac Castle, enriching the cultural landscape of Karlovac. Construction began in 1968, with the cornerstone blessed by Bishop Franjo Kuharić, and the church was consecrated in 1974 by Archbishop Franjo Šeper. Architect Josipa Šponar Muth designed the building, which serves as a pilgrimage destination especially on March 19 and May 1, celebrating the feasts of St. Joseph and St. Joseph the Worker respectively. The sanctuary holds a special place as St. Joseph was proclaimed protector of the Croatian Kingdom and people in 1687 by the Croatian Parliament. The church's role as a spiritual center is complemented by its active community life, including devotional practices like the "Crown of the Pure Heart of Joseph" prayer groups and a brotherhood aiding the dying. In 2026, the sanctuary was elevated to the status of a minor basilica, accompanied by the unveiling of its official coat of arms. Annually, tens of thousands of pilgrims visit, reflecting its importance in Croatian religious and cultural life. The sanctuary also hosts exhibitions and spiritual events, fostering devotion and cultural enrichment.
