Daneborg

Northeast Greenland National Park

45/10060 min

Daneborg, located on the south coast of the Wollaston Foreland peninsula in Northeast Greenland, is the headquarters of the Sirius Patrol, the elite dog sled patrol operating within the world's largest national park. Established originally in 1944 as an American military weather station during World War II, Daneborg took over from the previous patrol base Eskimonæs, which was destroyed by German forces in 1943. The station is situated at the mouth of Young Sund, opening into the Greenland Sea, and features a small population that varies seasonally, with around 12 people overwintering. Its remote Arctic location means it experiences a tundra climate characterized by short, cool summers and long, harsh winters with minimal precipitation, resembling desert conditions. Daneborg also has an airstrip approximately 400 meters long, facilitating access to this isolated outpost. The station's history is intertwined with wartime efforts and Arctic exploration, making it a unique point of interest in Greenland's vast wilderness.

Astuce: Visitors should plan their trip during the short summer months when conditions are less severe and access is more feasible. Due to the station's remote location and limited population, arranging visits through official channels and securing necessary permits in advance is essential. Booking transportation ahead of time is recommended, and visitors should prepare for extreme weather conditions. No commercial facilities are available on site, so all supplies and equipment must be brought along. Discounts or special arrangements may be available for researchers or official expeditions.

Histoire

1944

Daneborg was established in 1944 during World War II as an American military weather station commanded by Captain Strong of the US Coast Guard Cutter Storis.

1943

It replaced Eskimonæs, the former sledge patrol headquarters destroyed by German forces in 1943.

After the war, the North East Greenland Sledge Patrol took over the station, naming it Daneborg and using materials from the German wartime station Lille Koldeway to build parts of it.

Over time, Daneborg became the central hub for the Sirius Patrol's operations in Northeast Greenland National Park.
