Denarau Island is a 2.55 km² private resort area located on the western side of Viti Levu, Fiji, accessible by a short causeway. It is famed for its concentration of international luxury hotels including Hilton, Sheraton, Radisson, Westin, Sofitel, and Wyndham. The island's centerpiece is the 18-hole Denarau Golf Course, attracting golf enthusiasts from around the world. Denarau Marina serves as a hub for sea transfers to the popular Mamanuca and Yasawa island chains, enhancing its appeal for island-hopping travelers. The adjacent Port Denarau shopping precinct offers a variety of restaurants, a supermarket, bakery, hairdressers, and tour operators, providing comprehensive amenities for visitors. Originally developed starting in 1969 by American Dennis McElrath, the island underwent major transformation in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including clearing mangrove forests to build the golf course and marina. Despite financial setbacks, the resort has evolved into a premier tourist destination combining natural beauty with upscale leisure and convenience.
