Tietomaa Science Centre, located in Oulu, Finland, is the country's first science centre, opened to the public on June 29, 1988. It is housed in the former power plant and water tower of the Veljekset Åström leather factory, blending industrial heritage with modern scientific exploration. The centre aims to present scientific and technological achievements in an engaging and accessible way, appealing to visitors of all ages. Tietomaa once featured Finland's last regular 70 mm giant screen cinema, showcasing films with immersive 8/70 mm format similar to IMAX. Since 2013, 3D films have been shown using advanced digital Barco 4K projectors. The science centre is part of the Luuppi Museum and Science Centre complex. Currently, Tietomaa is undergoing a major renovation expected to complete by 2026, which will expand its facilities to include the Northern Ostrobothnia Museum and a nature exhibition developed with the University of Oulu. The new design includes a replacement for the adjacent theatre building, planned by Arkkitehtitoimisto Opus & Simon Mahringer. Tietomaa offers visitors interactive exhibitions such as the upcoming 'Masiina' exploring an imaginary past, 'Aurora Revelare' featuring the magical northern lights, and 'Eläinten jäljillä' focusing on nature and animal species. The centre combines education with fun, encouraging curiosity and hands-on learning about science and nature in northern Finland.
